HISTORY

Special Police Unit of the Police of the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior: Special Police Unit (SPU) is the basic organizational unit of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Srpska and it definitely belongs to the elite units of this field in the region. The Unit is engaged especially by the order of the Minister and the Director of the police. It got its current name 'Special Police Unit' in 2004, and at the end of 2005, it got its permanent address for the first time at the 'SARICA' base near Banja Luka. The Unit's current organization is the result of several reforms and reorganizations within the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Srpska.

PURPOSE AND ASSIGNMENTS

On its historical path, Special Police Unit managed to transform itself and now it is a highly professional unit for countering terrorism, highly specialized and equipped with earmarked, specialized equipment. The equipment is intended to be used for conducting special activities and tasks with the aim of providing maximum safety to the citizens and their assets, through support to the regular police forces in conducting police operations which are out of range of their professional capabilities and training. Primarily, this is related to countering terrorism on tactical and operational level, solving hostage crises, providing assistance to the Crime Police Administration and Public Security Centers in apprehending criminals and criminal groups, especially in situations where firearm resistance is expected.

ORGANIZATION

The Unit is organized in accordance with the European standards for Special Police Units, so that its structure and unit strength provide quality training and high operability level in performing certain tasks.

SELECTION AND TRAINING

Special Police Unit Training is based on the experiences of home and foreign specialized units and is harmonized with the universally accepted world standards and trends. In accordance with the strictly purposeful needs, the aim of Special police Unit training is to professionally train, drill, and prepare all the members of the operational unit both physically and mentally to successfully perform the most complicated and delicate tasks in all situations and in every moment. Everybody who wishes to become a member of Special Police Unit has to go through rigorous and difficult selective and specialist training. The contest for accepting new candidates depends on the needs of the Unit and available job posts.
